Tree Planting Ceremony Establishes 475 Hectares of Gardens in 14 Provinces

Phnom Penh, July 9, 2024 – The Tree Planting Ceremony was held on Tuesday, July 9, at the Banteay Angkor Forest Restoration Area in Lay Bo Commune, Tram Kak District, Takeo Province. The event was presided over by His Majesty King Norodom Sihamoni of Cambodia.

The "Plant Day" festival, first celebrated in 1952, aims to positively impact the environment and climate for the planet and humanity. Former Prime Minister Hun Sen reinstated the annual celebration in 1992 to continue the noble work initiated by the King. In 2024, Prime Minister Hun Manet continues this tradition under the new mandate of the Royal Government during the 7th legislature of the National Assembly.

The 29th Tree Day Ceremony, held on July 9, took place at the Banteay Angkor Forest Promotion and Restoration Station in Khna Village, Tram Kak District, Takeo Province. This location is significant as it adjoins the site where precious plantations were once cultivated by the highest monarch in 2008.

This year, 3,000 saplings of rosewood and peacock trees will be planted on a 3-hectare site. Additionally, the Forestry Administration of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries has planted 16,500 mixed saplings on another 10 hectares at the Sokrom Forest Extension and Rehabilitation Station in Samrong Commune, Phnom Kravanh District, Pursat Province.

The Tree Day Festival has established 475 hectares of parks in 14 capitals and provinces, promoting a nationwide movement of forest and tree planting. More than 80,000 hectares of plantations and numerous public or private parks in schools, pagodas, resorts, and private properties have been created. By 2024, the Forestry Administration plans to plant and distribute over 20.50 million seedlings through state budget allocations, with a capacity to plant and distribute 500,000 seedlings annually. Additionally, millions of saplings are privately planted by individuals, excluding fruit trees and other industrial crops.

Banteay Angkor Station was established in 1987 by the People's Revolutionary Committee of Takeo Province and later handed over to the Department of Forestry (now the Forestry Administration). It covers an area of 1,100 hectares, with 984 hectares used for growing various trees between 1986 and 2011. In 2017, the Royal Government allowed private companies to operate and replant trees on this site, resulting in 841 hectares of new plantations by 2023.

In 2022, the Royal Government allocated 78 hectares of land for the construction of the Gratitude Temple, the Buddhist Reception Temple, the Preah Ko-Preah Keo Temple, the Dharma Hall, and other artistic buildings adjacent to the celebration site for public benefit.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries has implemented various strategies and activities to manage, conserve, and develop forest resources according to the first phase of the Royal Government’s Pentagon Strategy. These include promoting state land registration, boosting the plantation industry, increasing nursery support for tree planting activities, and strengthening the prevention and suppression of natural resource crimes through closer cooperation with relevant authorities.
